1- Diagnostic Assessment of Catchment and Linkages to CFS
Diagnostic assessment of UKB been carried out focusing on four main aspects which are:
- a- land use and demographics assessment of Upper Kinta Basin;
- b- pollution source rapid inventory;
- c- stakeholder perception survey; and
- d- linkage to Central Forest Spine (CFS.
The output of this diagnostic assessment is the UKB Environmental Assessment Report (UKB EAR). The assessment showed different levels of pollution and issues based on aspects studied. Overall, the assessment showed there are some serious environmental issues especially erosion in the upper catchment and lack of proper understanding among the beneficiaries. The involvement of all the stakeholders at all levels is vital for protection and sustainable management of UKB. The assessment also provides better current scenarios and problem and analysis to help develop the proposed action plan. Please refer to the report for details.
2- Stakeholder Workshop
The Workshop on Presentation of Environmental Assessment Report and Discussion on the Strategic Management’s Content of Upper Kinta Basin was jointly organized with Yayasan Hasanah with the support from Department of Irrigation & Drainage (DID) Perak on January 23, 2019 at Kinta Riverfront Hotel and Suites, Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan. The workshop aimed to present the outcome from the upper Kinta Basin Environmental Assessment conducted from June 2018 to November 2018. Besides that, the workshop also focused on the content of UKB management strategies which to be implemented by the state government agencies as well as the private sectors, local communities and NGOs based in UKB.
The workshop began with the welcoming speech given by Dr Kalithasan Kailasam, manager of River Care Programme from Global Environment Centre. The workshop proceeds with the soft launching speech by YB. Dr. Abdul Aziz Bari, Exco of Education, Science, Environment, Green Technology and Information. The workshop proceeds with the soft launching gimmick and photography session. The session was continue by the presentation on UKB-EAR and followed by discussion on UKBMaS report and also the outcome presentations by the participants.
3- Training on Integrated Management of Kinta River with Orang Asli Community
The training on Integrated Management of Kinta River with Orang Asli Community was jointly organized with Yayasan Hasanah with the support from Department of Irrigation & Drainage (DID) Perak on January 27, 2019 at Dewan Komuniti Kampung Chadak, Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan. The workshop aimed to present the outcome from the upper Kinta Basin Environmental Assessment conducted from June 2018 to November 2018. Besides that, the workshop also focused on River Ranger module by giving the information in how to monitor the river and to understand the method to define the water quality using biological, physical and chemical approached. Furthermore, the participants were exposed with the sanitation and health module. Dr. Nirwan from Department of Occupational Health and Environment, Kinta District Health Office share with the participants the importance of proper sanitation and health issues if misconduct the propose sanitation actions. Cik Nurul Ain from Forestry Perak also shared with the Orang Asli community regarding the job scope of Forestry and action taken by them to overcome illegal logging and so on. The participants do the hands-on activity and shared the problem and issues faced by them.
The training was ended with the closing ceremony attended by Y.B. Isa Abd Hamid, Senator Orang Asli and Mr. Harulnizam Abd Rahman, Director of JAKOA Perak & Kedah. After the lunch, GEC met with the Tok Batin and the Chairman RPS from Kampung Sungai Chadak, Kampung Sungai Choh, Kampung Makmur and Kampung Sungai Suloh to discuss future activity and plans together with the villagers from the Orang Asli settlements. During the meeting, all the Tok Batin agreed to work closely with GEC with close support from JAKOA Perak.
4- Environmental Management Workshop with Ulu Kinta Sub-District Community
The Environmental Management Workshop with Ulu Kinta Sub-District Community was orgranized by Global Environment Centre (GEC) in partnership with Ipoh City Council (Community Development Department, LA21), Perak State Department of National Unity and Integration, and Perak State Department of Irrigation and Drainage, supported by Yayasan Hasanah on 14th April 2019 (Sunday) at UTC Perak. The workshop is part of strategic planning of Integrated Management of Upper Kinta Basin project (initiated by GEC and Yayasan Hasanah in support of the Central Forest Spine Initiative) aims to empower and increase the capacity of local communities on sustainable management of the environment especially river and forest. The workshop is also to develop a smart partnership and platform between local communities (urban and peri-urban) and the relevant government agencies/ department towards sustainable management of the Upper Kinta Basin.
The workshop began with the welcoming speech given by Yang Berbahagia Councilor (Clr) Mejar Kamaruddin Bin Abd Aziz, Ipoh Council Members representatives of Ipoh City Secretary. The workshop proceeds with the soft launching speech by Yang Berhormat Dr Abdul Aziz Bin Bari, Exco of Education, Science, Environment, Green Technology and Information of Perak State and followed by photography session and press conferences. The workshop was conducted through seven (7) paper presentations and video presentations by the officers from respective agencies.
The Nursery Preparation and Tree Planting Initiative Training with Orang Asli Community was orgranized by GEC in partnership with JAKOA, supported by Yayasan Hasanah. The training is part of strategic planning of Integrated Management of Upper Kinta Basin project (initiated by GEC and Yayasan Hasanah in support of the Central Forest Spine Initiative) aims to empower and increase the skills of the targeted Orang Asli community on the sustainable establishment of nursery and tree planting initiative. The training also as a follow up from the discussion with the all Tok Batin and JAKOA officers on 27th January 2019. This training is to empower the Orang Asli on special skill on how to start sustainableforest rehabilitation and protection initiatives. The training was carried out on 29th May 2019 (Wednesday) at Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Sungai Chadak. Overall attendance for the training is 33 people from Orang Asli community, JAKOA, Sahabat Hutan Gambut Kuala Langat Utara and GEC.
